Offer of beer graciously accepted. I have no idea about upgrading audio drivers, not least because mine have always worked fine, and always broken horribly if I ever try to change them.

Depending upon your card, the drivers, and the phase of the moon, you may find some things do or do not work. For some reason the nvidia control panel on my system crashes unless I start it from the command from the original archive, not from where it's installed on my system, and then it works fine. Other things for me worked just out of the box, like nvkeystone, which I love. Support for power management seems to vary wildly.
I really wish the laptop driver scene for XP wasn't as stupid as it is now, with vendor-specific releases of drivers and no motivation for the vendors to upgrade them.
The other tool I remember finding somewhat handy when upgrading was Driver Sweeper, which would usually do a better job of uninstalling old drivers than the packaged uninstall programs.
